W2W Mission
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi coastline, our town responded with the formation of a town-wide, public-private partnership, Wayland to Waveland (W2W), dedicated to the rebuilding of our sister city, Waveland, Mississippi.
We have helped Waveland with its massive cleanup effort; supplied needed household goods; fulfilled holiday wishes; restored its ball field, rebuilt three homes, and established personal relationships and enduring friendships with its citizens. We continue to make significant contributions to our fellow Americans in Waveland, most of whom lost their home and all their possessions in the storm.
The Building Project
Starting Oct 16 and continuing for the next 16 weeks, we will embark on our most ambitious effort, Mission to Mississippi, a $1.6 million dollar construction project to build eight new homes for families in Waveland. Working with W2W, builders and project workers from over 40 communities in New England have come together to bring needed skilled tradesmen to this devastated Gulf Coast community. Donations from vendors, clients, businesses, neighbors, citizens and supporters will fund the cost of land improvements, site prep, construction materials and labor and volunteers will help support the effort.
The Builders
Eight builders from the greater Boston area, led by Ken Vona Construction and including Custom Designs, Inc., Mitchell construction, Thoughtforms, Whitla Brothers, Twin Peaks Construction, CMG and Gallagher Home Builders, along with their workers and sub-contractors, will be sending over 400 skilled carpenters, plumbers, electricians, drywall hangers, floor installers, and painters to build each family their own 1200 square foot,
3 bdrm/2 bath home.
The Families
Working with other Disaster Relief Organizations, W2W identified deserving families in need of a new home and who would be good stewards of this generous gift. Families are responsible for the cost of the land and must participate in the rebuilding efforts as their time and talent allow.
The Schedule
Each Tuesday, a new crew of project workers will arrive to complete their assignment - framing, rough electrical and plumbing, roofing, HVAC, insulation, drywall, interior and exterior finish, painting, flooring and tile - on each of the eight homes. We are staging two building sites, approximately 1½ miles apart, and the project workers have committed to a 70 hour work week to ensure that these homes will be completed by Feb 3, 2008.
The Volunteers
We need 150 volunteers over the course of the sixteen week construction period (Oct 6 – Feb 3) to serve as drivers, provide logistical support, help out on the construction sites with painting, hammering and light construction work, provide support to the skilled project workers and complete the landscaping on each property. Volunteers can set their own schedule and work hours.
