October Waves of Relief
Fundraising Need is Great In Waveland, MS
October 30 – The October Waves have washed over Waveland, MS and there’s a great sense of accomplishment. The effort led by Wayland builder Peter Bachman (Custom Designs) that involved more than 30 Wayland adult volunteers, finished almost all tasks it planned to build and rebuild three homes in Waveland.
A group of Amish volunteers finished the roofing of two of the homes even while the last of the Wayland contingent made its way home. And, yet, so much remains to be done to get these three people back into their homes.
And it will take money. The Wayland to Waveland fund is depleted. However, the steering committee already is looking ahead to next waves of relief and repair. The job is not finished, they say. Two of the houses need sheetrock, and fixtures and so much more.
The Wayland to Waveland fundraising appeal is still active. More than $18,000 has been donated since the appeal letter went out in September. But, the group is far from its goal. Its suggested levels of giving include:
- $100 supplies a door
- $250 provides a window
- $500 provides a load of lumber
- $1,000 raises a roof
- $1,500 sponsors sending two skilled professionals (plumbers, electricians) who otherwise would not be able to go
- $2,500 buys bath/kitchen appliances and fixtures
All contributions are fully tax deductible as the funds are processed through the town. Make checks payable to the Wayland to Waveland Hurricane Relief Fund and mail to Town of Wayland, Wayland to Waveland Hurricane Relief Fund, 41 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778.
It is very clear from the October Wave effort that the best help to Waveland is to send skilled labor and purchased building materials along with volunteers. Having a project completely specified in advance is the most efficient use of volunteers. The Wayland to Waveland steering committee is planning to seek out other communities who want to help and try to organize an effort together to identify projects and plan to execute them.
The city of Waveland just is not organized enough to handle volunteers showing up to work… the city has lists of projects, but no tools, little details and no funds.
Also, watch for the committee to plan a presentation in Wayland to report on the October waves and the status of projects. They, of course, plan for the support to be an ongoing effort.
