Wayland Group Coordinating Trips
to Rebuild Three Waveland MS Homes
September 5, 2006 -- The Wayland to Waveland Hurricane Relief Committee invites you to attend an information meeting Sept. 13 at 7 pm in the Wayland Library about helping our long-distance neighbors in Waveland, MS.
Following Katrina’s fury, volunteers poured into the Gulf coast region, including Wayland’s sister community Waveland, Mississippi. Sometimes with nothing but a pick-up truck and a chainsaw, teams went from house to house to help the elderly pull their possessions from the rubble. People worked to help save lives, clear debris, and rebuild. Passionate volunteers would not be refused an opportunity to help. Many, frustrated with the slow mobilization that plagued traditional relief organizations, slept in tents, ate what they could, and slowly energized broken towns and desperate people. Contributions of money and goods made by Wayland residents, along with other Wayland projects to help Wavelanders, have been deeply appreciated. Our work is not done though. Conditions have improved on the Gulf coast, especially in Waveland.
Still, the needs to repair and rebuild are extensive. Thus, as part of Wayland’s commitment to its sister community, two trips to Waveland are planned for next month. Specifically, Wayland high school students (October 6-9; likely 10-12 students maximum) and Wayland adults (October 12-26; volunteers can stay for as little or as long as they like) will visit Waveland and help build and repair three homes.
This effort has been made possible by the generous donation of time and talent provided by Wayland resident and builder Peter Bachman. Peter and his crew, along with other Wayland adults of varying degrees of skill, will build one home and repair two others during the “adult” trip. Students will take on smaller jobs, clearing property and making smaller repairs, during their trip.
Feel free to attend an information meeting concerning these trips and the Wayland to Waveland effort. This meeting will take place on Wednesday September 13th from 7 PM to 9 PM at the Wayland library.
Our neighbors in Waveland are counting on us.
