Wayland Group Coordinating Trips
to Rebuild Three Waveland MS Homes
August 21, 2006 -- Logistics for two “waves of relief” from Wayland, MA to Waveland, MS were made available this week for Wayland residents interested in going on site with the “Wayland to Waveland” group to help. In addition, the Wayland to Waveland relief group announced it will hold an information meeting Wednesday, 7 pm, Sept. 13 at the Wayland Library for people interested in volunteering. All the details of the project as well as logistical questions will be presented by the group’s co-chairs.
The high school student trip will head south Friday afternoon October 6 and return in the evening on Monday October 9. The adult trip will run from October 12 thru the 26th.
The Wayland to Waveland relief group is organizing the two workforces to support local builder Peter Bachman’s efforts to rebuild three homes in the southern coastal city that is officially Wayland’s sister community.
The student trip will assist Waveland residents in making small repairs and clean up of properties. The adults will work with Bachman and his crew in building a new home for Waveland resident Ms. Melanie Keretas. Second, Ms. Melanie’s next door neighbor, Ms. Hazel Tracey, will receive a new roof and windows thanks to the Wayland volunteers. And third, Waveland resident Scott Blackwell will also receive newly installed windows. If there is time and enough volunteers, other repair projects will be done as well.
The group has been providing aid and support since last fall, shortly after the hurricane struck.
Help Needed
The Wayland to Waveland steering committee will be organizing volunteers and starting a fundraising campaign to help pay for construction materials.
