Wayland to Waveland’s
‘Mission to Mississippi’
Holiday Week
WEEK OF DEC. 26, 2007 – WAVELAND, MA
While the day after Christmas might have been a time to recover from holiday celebrations for some, it was a day of travel and work for those who came to Waveland to start the landscaping phase of the project.
The first couple days were spent on Combel, where grading was done and driveways and walkways were completed by the awesome work of the professionals. Meanwhile, the volunteers designed the foundation beds, spread the loam (which I learned is pronounced loom by anyone in the know), and planted the shrubs and trees on all four houses. Thanks to Skinner Nurseries for delivering such top quality plantings. And thanks too to our newest family, the Bourgeois family, for pitching in with so much of their time and elbow grease to help get the job done.
Then the rain came and proceeded to flood the entire street and neighborhood EXCEPT for our four yards! That is truly a testament to the quality of workmanship of the crew. We weren't so lucky on Maple, though, which accumulated a lot of water, and from Saturday on, the crew led by Stephen Vona succeeded in diverting 2 ponds of water and grading the land to avoid further flooding.
Taranto is also being graded, and work will now begin to lay these driveways and walkways. As of today, the loam is being delivered and the work of spreading it, laying the sod, and preparing for the hydroseeding will be done. Good luck to the Boston College students and other volunteers as they arrive over the next couple of days to help with this effort.
The houses are really starting to look like real homes now that the landscaping is being done. Check out the live web pictures to see the amazing progress.
