Wayland to Waveland’s
‘Mission to Mississippi’
Day 59 -- Week 9
THURSDAY, DEC. 13, 2007 – WAVELAND, MA
Hi everyone,
Today was the warmest day yet, with a high humidity. All the houses are complete on Combel with all the kitchens installed. We swept out the houses this afternoon while half the crew started installing the kitchens on Maple St. Divide and conquer. We emptied out the green storage trailers to make room for the kitchen appliances and moved job boxes from one site to the other. It was a day of heavy lifting.
Tom Mitchell, one of the incredible 8 builders and leader of the week, invited the students of Medfield High's poly sci class to have a dialogue with Destiny, one of our families. Medfield is trying to raise $200,000 (the cost of 1 house) and has connected with Destiny and her son Tristan. Destiny, Tom and myself stood in front of one house while speaking on the cell phone to the class. The students heard about our project and asked Destiny many questions--what was your hardest moment during the storm? How do you think our government handled the relief? Describe your FEMA trailer and your daily life living in a trailer. Destiny shared personal stories with the students --it was a moving experience.
Michael Collins, our architect extraodinaire arrived with his son Brett today. Immediately they were seen around the site carrying heavy equipment. Tonight Michael met Melanie, (whose house he designed). It was the first time meeting in person and tomorrow Mike, Brett and others will tour Waveland with Kathie Pinn. Melanie's house and Ms. Hazel's home will be a highlight of the tour.
Thank you all again for your continued support. Be careful shovelling.
Cindy
