Wayland to Waveland’s
‘Mission to Mississippi’
Day 5

SATURDAY, OCT. 20, 2007 – WAVELAND, MA

From Cindy Lombardo, W2W Co-chair

Hi everyone,

Day 5 was another great day. All 4 Combel St. houses are framed with most of the interior walls finished and most with the exterior trim. One house has all its windows installed with the rest to be finished tomorrow or Monday. It was a great working weather day.

Spent most of the day supporting the workers, but got to use a nail gun to install the hurricane straps. What a difference from my past experience of nailing by hand every strap--a total of 12 nails each.

We prepared the other 4 sites this afternoon, setting up the trailers with supplies to feed the workers. At 6 pm Kathie Steinberg, Cathy Wright, Jason (a framer) and I went to Taranto Street to rake the site. With the 5 inches of rain the other day the site was a clay pit. We raked the foundations. Another worker came to move the lumber with the lull and got stuck in the deep soft clay. We worked until 7:15 trying to dig out the huge tires, but to no avail. Tomorrow we will move the 2nd lull to the site to help. Met the neighbors on Taranto Street who were a bit concerned with who would be moving in, and where all our vehicles would park. In the end , we got permission to park on a neighbor's propery as long as we restore it on the last day.

The Blossom family came to visit as well as Leslie Orange withher 2 daughters. She is so polite and proper and her girls are extremely polite. She has 2 daughters, racially mixed. Tomorrow we move to Maple and Taranto Streets to begin the decking for next week's crew. The weather should be nice in the morning with rain moving in for the late afternoon and some of Monday.

The Rebuilding Together crew (the group dedicated to Waveland for next week) began to arrive. They delivered the flooring to Ms. Hazel's house. She was so moved she cried. It will be a blessing when we install the floor and the baseboard. She is looking so frail.

That is all for now. Oh, check out the website. Thanks to Cliff for freezing the camera on Combel. Most of the guys were able to say hi to their families and wave. Some of them made signs. It was great.

Cindy
