Wayland to Waveland’s
‘Mission to Mississippi’
Day 3
OCT. 18, 2007 – WAVELAND, MA
From Cindy Lombardo, W2W Co-chair
Hi everyone,
Today was so hot and humid. I think the workers did an incredible amount of work this morning. We kept everyone hydrated due to the humidity. Our lunch helpers delivered a great lunch.
Destiny Tullos, one of our families came with her grandmama to visit the site. We showed her around and introduced her to each crew. She was enthusiastic, adorable and work stopped for the few minutes she was in front of each home. Everyone greeted her and told her that "this will be your house." She is going to get all 8.!!!!!
After a great lunch, everyone went back to work. Kathie and I interviewed another candidate, an undercover police officer from Waveland who is engaged to be married. He has been on the force for 10 years and was on duty during Katrina. He told his story and once again I marvel at how strong people's survival instincts are. He will make a great homeowner. His fiancee came to meet us Courtney was personable and appreciative.
At 2:30, as fast as you could snap your fingers, the skies opened. Lightning, thunder and a whole lot of mud! We raced around the site covering up power tools and getting soaked. The rain subsided, everyone went out to work again. But the rain came back and we closed up early. It was unsafe due to the rain, tornado warnings and so much slippery mud. Lots of laundry to do tomorrow for the crew!
Tune in tomorrow as the hot and humid weather should break.
Cindy
